Application of Ozone in Municipal Wastewater Treatment
Ozone has been widely applied in the field of municipal wastewater treatment for the degradation of refractory organic pollutants. It is mainly used in end-stage upgrading projects to further improve COD discharge standards. COD can be reduced to below 20, and ozone also provides disinfection and sterilization functions. When combined with multiphase catalytic oxidation technology, the generation of hydroxyl radicals can be increased, further enhancing oxidation capacity, reducing ozone consumption, and lowering operating costs.
Functions of Ozone
1. Ozone can effectively remove COD and anionic surfactants in wastewater. At normal temperature, ozone decomposes back into oxygen within approximately 30 minutes, leaving no residue or secondary pollution, while increasing dissolved oxygen in the receiving water body.
2. Ozone can be generated on-site. Compared with liquid chlorine and sodium hypochlorite, it eliminates storage and transportation processes, thereby reducing safety risks.
3. Ozone has excellent inactivation and lethality effects on microorganisms, bacteria, and viruses. Its disinfection performance is superior to chlorine, chloramine, and chlorine dioxide.
4. Ozone has strong oxidizing ability and can react with chromophoric groups in water, such as dissolved organic matter, suspended colloids, iron, manganese, and particulate matter, thereby reducing water color and improving clarity.
