
Application of Ozone in Industrial Wastewater Treatment
Ozone is a strong oxidizing agent capable of oxidizing a wide range of organic and inorganic substances. It can remove toxic and hazardous compounds such as phenols, benzene rings and their derivatives, cyanides, sulfides, nitrites, iron, manganese, and organic nitrogen compounds, thereby improving the biodegradability of industrial wastewater.Ozone can decompose refractory organic pollutants and remove COD that is difficult to eliminate by conventional methods. In addition, ozone has strong oxidative bleaching capability, significantly reducing water color and removing odors.
Functions of Ozone
Chain breaking: Decomposes large, refractory organic molecules
Ring opening: Decomposes phenol, pyrogallol, cresol, xylenol and their derivatives
Metal removal: Oxidizes iron and manganese ions into metal oxides for separation from water
Detoxification: Reduces toxicity of wastewater containing phenols, cyanides, and pesticides
Decolorization: Breaks double bonds of chromophoric groups, thereby decolorizing wastewater
COD reduction: For high-COD industrial wastewater, combined processes such as ozone + catalyst or ozone + hydrogen peroxide can be used to partially remove COD while improving biodegradability
